Before you hit the open road with your buddies, you'll want to do some planning to ensure a safe and successful motorcycle group ride. Below, we've gathered our favorite tips for motorcycle riding in a group. Packing

You'll need some supplies for your ride, so pack food and water as well as rainproof outerwear if the forecast calls for it. For overnight trips, pack camping gear, toiletries, clothes, and any medications you use. Bring whatever you need for a comfortable trip.

There are also some supplies that the group needs to bring. You'll want access to a toolkit in case someone's motorcycle runs into problems on the road. A first-aid kit is also helpful if minor medical issues come up. These items are essential, but you don't need every rider to bring them. Instead, coordinate one or two people to bring these.

Getting the Motorcycles Ready

Every rider should perform two steps before the trip. First, everyone should fill up their gas tank. This prevents the entire group from having to make detours or long stops because one person needs to fuel up. Second, everyone should conduct a pre-ride inspection. This involves looking for red flags that might turn into problems on the road. Check everything from the brakes to the headlight. If something isn't working right, you'll be able to get it fixed before the ride.

Plan the Route

It's thrilling to head out with no destination in mind and see where the road takes you. However, this approach is logistically difficult with multiple riders. Make an established route in advance to ensure everyone knows where they are going and how to get there. Talk to your group members about any stops they want to hit, such as an iconic destination or local restaurant.

Choose a Riding Formation

Riding formations give every motorcycle rider an assigned place. This helps reduce the risk of someone getting separated or lost. It also keeps the group more visible to other motorists, which keeps you safer on the road.

The ideal formation is the staggered double line. The person in front of you is 1 second ahead of you. The people in front and behind you are two seconds away. If you take a bird's eye view of this formation, it would look like a zipper.
