It’s that time of year again. We may not get the kind of snowy weather that a lot of the other regions get, but that’s a big bonus for motorcycle riders. Odds are, you won’t have to put your bike in storage and you’ll be able to keep riding it throughout the winter. However, it can get a little chilly down here, especially later in the evening. That’s why North County Indian Motorcycle® has provided some tips for riding your motorcycle in colder weather. You can also stop by our location in San Marcos, California, to check out some Indian® motorcycles for sale near San Diego and Oceanside.

Wearing the Right Gear

We’ve already talked a little bit about safety gear, but when temperatures drop, there’s a new element you’ll need to worry about: staying warm. Even when it’s not freezing out, the added wind from riding can chill you to the bone.

The best way to combat cold weather is to wear layers. Layers are better at keeping you insulated and it’s easier to remove layers than it is to try to find jackets and sweaters you don’t have. Start with some thermal underwear with a layer of wool or fleece on top. Finally, your normal riding jacket and pants should suffice, but you might want to invest in something waterproof or made from breathable material.

There are other accessories that can help you stay warm, like a neckerchief, gloves, and warm riding boots. If you really need it (although perhaps not in southern California), there are heated clothes available to keep you extra toasty.

Check Your Tires

Cold weather can affect your tire pressure, which can result in less efficient handling and even dangerous riding conditions. Generally, for every 10-degree drop, expect to lose one or two psi. Be sure to check your tire pressure before you ride. This will give you the most accurate reading.

Take Care of Your Body

Part of preparing for colder weather means taking good care of your body. Something as simple as eating right can play a big role in keeping you happy and healthy. Food is fuel for the body and will help keep you nice and warm as you burn calories. Also, drink plenty of water to avoid fatigue and dehydration. Pulling over as needed and getting a good night’s sleep can also play key roles in keeping you alert and focused.

Road Conditions

As we mentioned, the cold weather we receive down here in southern California is often cold, but not dangerous. However, there are exceptions to this, and as weather patterns continue to change, it’s probably only going to get worse. The best way to know if you’re ready for a day of riding is to check the weather. Things like wind storms, rain storms, or icy or snowy conditions might encourage you to find other means of transportation, or put off your trip.

You might also want to think about traffic. As those from colder climates will tell you, it’s often not the snow and ice that’s the biggest danger, it’s the people commuting alongside you, who can lose control at any moment. If road conditions are already questionable and it’s bunching up traffic, you might want to adjust your plans.

Also keep in mind that if there is snow, the government will likely use snow-clearing methods that can present their own problems, including material like salt and gravel.

With the right plan, you can be ready for even some of our coldest weather spurts. And just in time, too! Then again, if you still need the motorcycle, stop by your local Indian Motorcycle® dealer, North County Indian Motorcycle® in San Marcos, and we’ll show you what we have available right now.
